Sir Noel Ellerby of Laxford Hall has been informed that his home has been burgled but nothing stolen as he informs friend Dr. Priestley. On returning home , he is discovered dead the next day. The doctor believes it was not a natural death and so he and his assistan Harold Merefield investigate with the help of Inspector Hanslet.
