1864 Lizzie Martin,29, has arrived in London to take up the position of companion to her godfather's widow, slum landlady Mrs Parry. Only to be informed that the previous companion , presumed to have eloped, has been discovered dead in one of Mrs Parry's old properties. Inspector Ross investigates and Lizzy is not careful or clever enough.
Overall an enjoyable historical mystery
