Jane and the Burning Question and other stories by Sarah J. Waldock
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This Emma sequel is a collection of one short novella and six short mystery stories concerning Caleb Armitage, Bow Street Runner and his wife Jane (Churchill nee Fairfax).
1 - The Burning Question - Where the Armitages investigate a possible insurance fraud for Lloyds. Was the burning of Hill House home of Mr Clement Attwood an accident or arson. But more more importantly was the death of a servant girl in the fire murder or accident. They stay at Sir Randolph Pettiman home while investigating
2 - The Poacher's secret - They are approached by the fiancee of Honaria Pettiman, Lord Wulcombe, to investigate the death of his half brother and the case of poaching.
3 - The Elephants - Caleb's half-sister Sukey and her family return from India with gifts of ceramic elephants. Later they are disturbed by burglars.
4 - The Deadly Flower - Who would want to kill eleven year old Sylvain Duquemin Bathurst.
5 - The Nimble Thief - Who has stolen some of Jane's jewellery, surely not the maid.
6 -Lady of Expensive Virtue - ex-whore Miss Henrietta Abercrombie needs to find out who of her loyal servants and friends are stealing her jewellery.
7 - The Younger Pretender - a secret door and passage is found in the Armitage home. Leading to possible deadly consequences.
An enjoyable set of mysteries
