A Troublesome Woman by Suzanne Downes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
1862 Inspector Danby Lazarus is dining with his Sergeant, Tom Stonier, and his wife Meg when they are called out to a suspicious death. The death of shop girl Mollie Waters. The doctor believes she may have been poisoned and the police continue their investigation on that premise. Meanwhile Lord Allingham calls them to Havering Hall because his daughter has gone missing and wants to keep this quiet so as not to harm her reputation. Unfortunately relations between Lazurus and Allingham are to put it mildly very bad.
Then another death occurs.
An enjoyable well-written mystery with its likeable characters. Although I did work out the guilty party it did not distract from the story. A very good start to the series and I look forward to the next.
