1920s. Christopher Prentiss 16, has arrived home to Cranley Hall, that of his grandfather, the Marquess of Edgington, ex-superintendent of Scotland Yard. Lord Edgington has decided that it is time to be adventurous and so the next day they are up in a balloon piloted by Chet Novicki when a death occurs. Edgington and Christopher investigate.
