Travelling to friends the Stapletons, Maltravers’ car breaks down and he walks to the nearest home. That of the Carringtons of Carwelton Hall. There he is informed that Carrington has a copy of an unpublished work entitled ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Attwater Firewitch by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’. But life in the village is not straightforward and soon a murder occurs.
